  • 1.  AP11D as router and PoE Switch

    Hi All,

    I've got a RJ45 connection to the ISP service and a 1930 PoE switch and I want to use a AP11D as primary router (so I can remove the ISP-given router) powering on via PoE.

    As I've understood reading some documantation, the only PoE- IN port is the E0 and the PT port is only to connect the E0 on the back to the bottom part E0/PT port.

    To use the AP11D as Primary router I have to connect the WAN to the E0 port, but, to power on the AP via PoE, I have to connect this port to a PoE source, is this correct?

    I must use the Switch ad PoE source, how can I do to solve the problem?

    From a technical perspective, the AP can support up to 64 clients per radio (so max would be 128).  However, realistically, a max of about 75 clients should be expected without overloading the processor. :) ... if you have a room with 100 people and they each have 2 devices, then you should have 3-4 AP's in that space to support that number.

    In addition to that, you have a realistic limit on a subnet of about 500 or so devices before running into broadcast issues.  If your network is designed to limit the number of devices per subnet (using VLANs), then you should be able to get a realistic maximum of 50 AP's x 75 clients = 3,750 clients (on a minimum of 8 subnets).

    Our high school has two "sites" (about 60 AP's in all).  We have a guest WiFi subnet (on VLAN40), we have four WiFi subnets to divide the student devices by grade level (each on their own VLAN), and we have two VLANs to handle the subnets for all other networks (staff devices and management).  Our high school has about 600 high school students and 50+ staff members, and we have no issues with WiFi connectivity (cross my fingers).  A "site" can have up to 8 WiFi networks... we have 7 per site.

    Ok, but I think this answer Is for another question/post... And not for this One 🙁

    Yes, you are correct. AP11D E0/PT is the only PoE In port. We either need to use the power adapter to power the AP11D or a PoE switch to power the AP11D.

    Ok, this is the confirmation to what I've understood.

    I need to know if and how it would be possible to use the PoE switch to power on the AP11D AND use it as primary router given the fact the ISP is giving RJ45 connection to its services.

    You can. You need a managed switch like InstantOn 18xx or 19xx. Then you configure separate vlan for ISP provider and put AP11D into this vlan. For users you need a separate vlan(s) originating from AP11D. With some planning you can use the same switch.

    Much more clear configuration is to use two switches. For example InstantOn 1430 8G Class4 PoE unmanaged switch for ISP and 1830 or 19xx series for users, if you need more vlans on the user side.

    Thanks Goradz, but those ways are somewhat that I would avoid:

    • using another PoE switch (even a 8port) is more expensive than using a PoE injector or a powersupply;
    • using VLANs, by a security point of view, would be translated to use at least 3 port on the switch (2 to bridge the ISP and the AP11D and one to service the rest of the users): it is mandatory to phisiscally separate the ISP-Router traffic from the user traffic...
