  • 1.  Wired PoE Ring doorbells and cameras stopped working

    Has anyone had issues with Ring devices lately? We have a location that has been running PoE‑powered Ring devices off of an HPE Instant On 1930 for months with no issues. After a recent power outage, none of the Ring devices are able to come online.

    I'm not sure whether this is a PoE issue or a DHCP issue. Other PoE devices on the same switch are still working, and DHCP is working for non‑Ring devices. We also tested a Ring device on a separate non Instant On switch, and it came up immediately.

    Does anyone have any thoughts?

    Have you checked the power allocation on the switch?  Do the Ring devices boot with an appropriate power injector?

    To me it sounds like part of the POE has gone out in the switch. I've had that happen with other brands before after an unexpected power issue.

    That's a really good thought I was wondering the same thing.  Yesterday to test the tech brought out a new Instant-On 8 port PoE switch and it has the same problem. He also brought a generic non managed 8 port PoE switch and they all booted with up no problem on that device.

     

    This is really bizarre,  I'm wondering if that old Ubiquiti PoE compatibility issue has grown to include Ring devices with the latest Instant On firmware.

    To keep functioning Power over Ethernet (PoE) Ring devices (such as IP cameras, VoIP phones, or network switches) from dropping offline, disable Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE). EEE is an eco-mode that puts idle ports into a "sleep" state, which heavily disrupts the continuous communication needed for active ring topologies.   The length of cable to the Ring plus the total mount of power budget the switch can deliver and divide that by the power class the device will require.    

    • Type 1 (PoE): Up to 15.4 W (IEEE 802.3af)
    • Type 2 (PoE+): Up to 30 W (IEEE 802.3at)
    • Type 3 (PoE++): Up to 60 W (IEEE 802.3bt)
    • Type 4 (PoE++ / 4PPoE): Up to 100 W (IEEE 802.3bt

    The enterprise switch can slam loads of class 4 ++ power over a thick gauge 22 solid core CAT6 or CAT5E but a smaller switch does not have that capacity and your "power budget" will disable power to devices after boot based on total available and a power outage may have wiped out the EEE being disabled. .

    Just a follow-up,

     

    We tested disabling the EEE mode and it did not help.  At this point it really looks like Ring devices are no longer compatible with Instant on PoE switches.
