  • 1.  Instant On 1830 - VLANs over LACP Trunk

    Posted 07-25-2024 01:46 PM

    Hi,

I have 3 Proxmox servers in a cluster connected to an Instant On 48p 1830. Each server have four (4) 1G ports which I have configured as LACP 802.3ad and connected all four ports to the 1830.
The 1830 have been configured with three (3) LACP Trunk groups with 4 ports each, one group per server.

Communication between the servers and VMs work as long as I don't try using VLANs.
As soon as I try tagging the traffic with VLANs it stops working.
I have verified that VLANs work between servers if I use tagged ports in the 1830, but then I lose the increased bandwidth from the LACP.

So my question is, does VLANs work with LACP Trunking?

    According to the 1830 manual:

"A port that is added to a trunk retains its VLAN configuration as a "shadow" configuration, meaning the port VLAN configuration is not active while the port is a member of the trunk.
When the port is removed from the trunk, the port VLAN configuration becomes active."

Is this the behaviour of LACP? Or is it just for the 1830 switch?
When I google this issue it seems that LACP works with VLANs, so it's making me a bit confused.

    Thanks in advance

    Hi Martin,

Are you adding the tagged VLANs to the trunks, or the individual ports within each trunk?

For example, on my 1830, I just tried creating a new vlan "42" and adding  vlan 42 to an existing trunk  ( consisting of ports 15 and 17) .

The vlan appears on the trunk:

But not on the ports within the trunk:

Do you see the same behaviour in the web gui?

    (I'm running software version v3.0.0 from https://community.arubainstanton.com/blogs/jamie-easly1/2022/02/07/1830 )

Also, just to confirm, in proxmox, are your bridges defined as vlan aware?

Update 1: I just configured my Synology with an LACP 2 port Bond & VLAN  and it appears to still work .

    The trunk on the switch:

The vlan dhcp config on opnsense:

    Thanks,

    Travis.
