I just got done wresting with this. Drove me nuts... I have an RMA for this as of today as some of these units are known to not get on the portal.
Here is what I did to tshooot ....
- Create a new separate site and add the gateway. The new site asks for the Serial which otherwise is not asked in the current site (I don't know why that is not available now)
- Let it update for an hour depending on your connection speed
- Configure it a bit (don't go crazy) you might waste valuable time.
- Unplug it and then let it reboot after about 90 seconds.
- See if it reconnects. Mine did not even on the test site.
- Leave the test site configured and reset the box
- Reconnect to the test site it will take but it will also ask if you want to ruin the config. which is not there as it is a blank box.
- Walla! Should be good.
In my humble onion I wouldn't put this in a working production environment yet. I still think they are flaky as hell
Mess with it in the test site for while see how you feel about it then make your decision
RMA started today will get a new one I suppose in a week.

I'm currently running a SOHO network with 4 Switches (1930 Series) and multiple AP. So far, all devices running smoohtly since a while, managed by teh Aruba IOn portal.
I currently fail to add a SG2505 to my setup ... at all.
- connected port 5 to ISP upstream port (WAN)
- connected port 1 to a laptop directly (LAN)
- Box is reachable on the LAN side
- internet connected, using laptop to access HPE iOn portal
Add a device is starting discovery, wich fails.
The local Webinterface on the SG reports: Device onboarding status ; Attempting to onboard
If tried several reboots and factory resets (using the pinhole) without success.
Hope you could provide guidance / advice how to manage that onboarding process OR manual reset/onboard/config process ... whatever helps to succeed.
