  • 1.  What happens if you need to update/restart stack for 1960 12XGT

If I were to restart the switch stack or update the firmware will it restart both nodes at the same time?  These are setup in a chain stack (2 1960's).  They are also locally managed.

In the past I was thought I read if you needed to do either (restart/firmware upgrade) it does both at the same time.  I can't seem to find any documentation on this.

I read that in the documentation too at one point, but that was not my experience when I did an upgrade.  In our case we are using the switches for iSCSI over 10G Ethernet, and with it rebooting both switches simultaneously we have to schedule downtime and shutdown our environment just to do a firmware update.  The behavior of rebooting both switches for the firmware update at the same time is not acceptable to most companies operations.

With InstantOn switches, a firmware update always leads to a reboot of the full stack, as every member gets the firmware pushed by the conductor. Only with a reboot the new firmware gets active, so this is necessary. BUT: You get asked after uploading the firmware, if you want to reboot now or later. So at least you can choose when to reboot. If you want to have a stack without the need of rebooting all members at the same time for a firmware update, you should choose a more professional HPE switch series which supports VSX f.e.

I wish I could've stuck with the higher end models, for what we needed just for 10GBe traffic you can't beat the pricing.

I might just look at removing the stack, but will have to see if removing a member from the stack wipes the config.  If so, I'll have to schedule downtime to do all of this.

Any idea how to remove the stack?  Support says it's possible, but no documentation on how to do with the local UI.  They also said it shouldn't wipe the config, but not confident.

Maybe just take down the Member of the stack by plugging out the power cord. After that, delete the stacking port config from the Conductor. Either reset Switch 2 or try to boot up without the stacking cables and just delete the stacking port config like you did on the Conductor. But I never treid that on my own.
